Colored Asphalt: A Functional Road Binder in the Polymer Materials Field
Colored asphalt (also known as colored binder) is a general term for a class of road binders processed from polymer materials such as petroleum and chemical products.
Colored asphalt (also known as colored binder) is a general term for a class of road binders processed from polymer materials such as petroleum and chemical products. Contrary to common perception, colored asphalt is not merely “colored asphalt,” but rather a novel material system polymerized from polymers, resins, plasticizers, and other additives. Its mechanical and rheological properties meet the same technical standards as conventional petroleum asphalt for roads, with a temperature tolerance range spanning 77°C to -23°C.
Product Classification and Technical Pathways
Based on preparation methods, colored asphalt primarily falls into two categories:
The first type uses colorless binder as a base, achieving coloring through specialized pigments. The colorless binder can be formulated from light-colored polymers like petroleum resins, representing the current mainstream product form in the market.
The second type is directly modified from conventional asphalt, yielding a reddish-brown hue and exhibiting specific anti-aging properties.
Application Scenarios and Functional Segmentation
Colored asphalt is primarily used in paving for various slow-moving systems and landscape roads, including greenways, bicycle paths, pedestrian walkways, and landscaped garden roads. Based on performance characteristics, it can be categorized into three main types: drainage, anti-slip, and rutting-resistant:
Drainage-type colored asphalt evolved from permeable pavement technology, balancing water permeability with aesthetic appeal. It suits traffic-signal roads, sidewalks, residential roads, parks, plazas, and parking lots.
Anti-slip colored asphalt utilizes high-polish-value aggregates combined with binding agents to create a surface layer with an optimal friction coefficient. It is suitable for braking zones and urban landscape surfaces requiring high slip resistance.
Rutting-resistant colored asphalt incorporates modifiers such as curing agents to enhance the material's deformation resistance under high-temperature conditions.
Color System and Customization Features
Specialized pigments for colored asphalt have established a comprehensive color sequence encompassing red, yellow, green, blue, gray, brown, and other hues. Certain colors align with National Standard Color codes of the People's Republic of China, such as iron red, orange yellow, and light green. This color system offers personalized design options for landscape road projects.
